x + 40 = 180                => subtract 40 from each side

x + 40 - 40 = 180 -40

x = 140

I doubt this is what was meant. I will update this answer if you provide more info.

BTW: y = 40 degrees as alternate interior angles created by  a transversal cutting parallel lines are equal.
