An apartment complex has a floor plan with the dimensions shown. To effectively air condition a room, 20BTU's (British Thermal U

nits) are required for every square foot. Determine the minimum BTU's required for an air conditioner to cool the room effectively. Round the answer to the nearest 100 BTU's.

The dimensions of the room is not given. Lets assume a value and calculate BTU accordingly.

Answer and Explanation:

BTU, or British Thermal Unit, is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1° F.

In other words,BTU's measures the amount of heat an AC (or any other cooling unit) can remove from a room per hour. Higher the BTU, the more powerful the cooling.

Calculation:

Lets assume that a room is 10 feet wide and 14 feet long.

  • Step 1

Calculate the size of the room by multiplying the height of the room with its width:

size of the room= 10 × 14

                          = 140 square feet

  • Step 2

Then multiply the size of the room that you obtained in step 1 with 20 BTU per square foot, in order to get the minimum BTU's required for AC to cool a room,

140 × 20= 2800

2800 BTU cooling capacity is required.

NB: You did not provide the diagram that contains the dimensions of the floor plan. Hypothetical values will be assumed for the dimension of the floor plan, you can substitute your own dimensions for the question

Answer:

The minimum BTU required for an air conditioner to effectively cool a room of dimension 15 ft × 20 ft is 600 BTU

Explanation:

The value of the BTU (British Thermal Unit) indicates the cooling power of the air conditioner

From the question, 20 BTU is required for 1 square foot

Assumption: Dimension of the floor plan 15 ft × 20 ft

Area of the floor plan = length * Width

Area of the floor plan = 300 ft²

20 BTU = 1  ft²

x BTU = 300 ft²

x * 1 = 300 * 20

x = 6000 BTU

Therefore, the minimum BTU required for an air conditioner to effectively cool a room of dimension 15 ft × 20 ft is 600 BTU
