They did use German troops but at that time there was no Germany. Germany as it exists today was a collection of states ruled by their own kings. The Germanic state of Hessen sent troops to help the British but the British had to pay Hessen for it.
We Americans had allies, the French sent us troops and a navy and Spain sent us gun powder. The main reason we had allies were, Spain and France didn't like the British more than they liked us but they were still allies. France at that time was also prerevolutionary, They had a king still.
The real heavy lifting of the revolution was still performed by the patriots at that time though.
Individuals from foreign states also helped us. The Marquis de LaFayette, Sasabar Polaski and Friederich Wilhelm von Steuban helped train and organize the Continental Army so it could fight a proper war and were instrumental to the success of the revolution's military side.
