Several reasons actually. The most important one was its location. Thanks to it it enabeled the trade with African, European and Asian countries. Another thing is that it also was a good place to start a war on other countries.

It decreased and very significantly so!

Most of native Americas died of diseases brought by Europeans; but some were also killed directly by the Europeans. Many also mixed with the Europeans (by marriage or rape...) so there was also a mixed indigenous-white population.

Since you don't specify in your question whether you mean any specific region, i will assume that it could be anywhere.

So let's take Indonesia as an example: the reform was only allowing logging in some regions, and not allowing logging outside of these regions.

The  problem with this is that this is hard to implement and despite this prohibition, logging is still widespread everywhere.
