Why did Reagan build up the military

While Reagan was in office the United States budget for the military increased by a lot. This was because the United States was still in an arms race with the USSR and besides that, the United States had to make sure not only that the world is protected by them but also that it would remain strong and stable enough even after the USSR was gone.
