The decision of the Supreme Court was that the African American Dred Scott was not considered to be a citizen of the United States because he was a black slave. So he had no right to appeal to the US Constitution for protection. He was not considered a person, he was considered property. People in the north feared and disagreed with the decision. They supported abolitionism while southerners supported slavery because their economy depended so much on slaves.
