The american revolution was inspired by many enlightenment ideas and philosophers such as those of John Locke and Rousseau. They believed that governments should be led by people, not monarchs, and that these people should have the right to be educated. They believed that people can earn respect and become good citizens by improving themselves, not by just being born into an aristocratic European family.
