The prehistoric reptiles known as dinosaurs arose during the Middle to Late Triassic Period of the Mesozoic Era, some 230 million years ago. They were members of a subclass ofreptiles called the archosaurs (“rulingreptiles”), a group that also includesbirds and crocodiles.
