Doughnuts are a dessert tradition enjoyed by millions of Americans everyday. A little known fact is that doughnuts have been inv

ented at least twice. Archaeologists working in the southwestern United States have uncovered petrified fried cakes with holes in them. These early doughnuts were found in prehistoric Native American ruins. No further information surfaces until the sixteenth-century, when, in Holland, Dutch bakers prepared deep-fried batter known as an olykoek, or “oil cake.” These oil cakes, named for their high oil content, were made with sweetened dough and sprinkled with sugar.
Pilgrims brought the delicious and popular confection to America. The round oil cakes made in New England acquired the name of “dough nuts” because they were small, about the size of a walnut, and because they were made of dough. The name “doughnut” remains in use today, but is sometimes spelled “donut.” Stories vary, but most agree that the hole in the center of the doughnut is credited to a New England sailor, Hanson Gregory.

Grown by many U.S farmers, bread has been an American staple for many years. Because many people needed to save every last piece of bread they had, people began to experiment with the bits and pieces of leftover bread. Hanson Gregory was a sea captain from Maine who worked on a lime trading ship. He would often bake and fry cakes from remaining bread bits he sweetened. Tasty, but soggy in the middle, the fried cakes needed some changes. Captain Gregory experimented with cutting out the center of the cakes. This was a practical move which allowed increased surface area for more uniform frying. The result was the elimination of the dessert’s soggy center. Captain Hanson Gregory had stumbled upon a superb solution and redefined the shape of the pastry. The circular ring shape with a center hole is known as the American doughnut shape.

Doughnuts can be placed into three categories; glazed, filled, and cake doughnuts. Most popular are the glazed doughnuts, which are made with yeast and sweet dough. They are dipped in a sweet glaze or covered with icing, usually chocolate or vanilla. Filled doughnuts are usually made with yeast, too. The light density permits them to be inserted with a number of different fillings for extra sweetness and flavoring. The filling options include vanilla cream, chocolate cream, pudding, custard, and jellies. These filled desserts are formed into either a round or oblong shape without the center whole. Cake doughnuts are another favorite variety. They are the densest and heaviest pastry of the doughnut family because they are not made with yeast. These treats derive their name from their cake-like density. In addition, the name is appropriate because of the popular cake toppings used on them, such as confetti sprinkles, frosting striping, coconut, and chopped nuts.

Americans love doughnuts! Once only available as delightful treats and specialty items on bakery shelves, delicious doughnuts are now on grocery store shelves everywhere! Also, franchise stores such as Dunkin’ Donuts have been operating since 1950. Thirty five varieties are available, so no customer needs to be content with just one variety. More than 2.7 million customers enjoy doughnuts everyday. Even the increased emphasis on calorie counting and healthy eating has done little to impact the demand for doughnuts. National doughnut chains have introduced whole wheat doughnuts and are taking steps to reduce the grams of trans fat in their products. Whatever the fat and calorie content, these delicious ring-shaped or filled treats known as doughnuts dominate the dessert world.

A)Doughnuts are sweetened bits of leftover bread.

B)Captain Hanson Gregory was a sea captain from Maine who loved doughnuts.

The SIFT Method of Liteary Analysis with "Eveline"
AlexFokin [52]

One of the symbols James Joyce uses as a resource is the sea. This symbols appears at the end of the story, when Eveline seems not to be able to take a decision. The meaning of the symbol is the unknown. When he writes "all the seas of the world tumbled about her heart", Joyce tells us that Eveline felt the anguish of not knowing what would happen to her if she chose to elope with Frank. The seas of the world represent seven negative feelings, among which it is uncertainty. The author chooses to use the sea as a symbol of desolation because when you set off into it, you never know if you are going to come back. When we think about the sea, we think about a journey, so coming back is implied. Therefore, she may assume that she would have to come back some day and that she was not going to be welcome back in her own land. Leaving her father, although he was abusive, would have been considered a serious offense by Dubliners of the beginning of the twentieth century.

One of the items of imagegy used by Joyce is the odour of dusty cretonne. By this smell, defined as odour with the negative connotation that word has, the author intends to make us feel the same disgust Eveline is feeling at the end of another day in which more of the same old story was what she had to live. The fact that the cretonne is "dusty" gives us the idea of old, dirty and fadded. All these adjectives are the ones that also describe her life.

There is a personification used at the beginning of the story. It is when he writes "... the evening invade de avenue". The author gives the evening the power of a person when he states that it performs the action of invading. In this case, his intention is to show that even an abstract thing is stronger than the weakened and tired Eveline. She is not only tired in the physical sense, but specially in the moral one. The evening approaches and it does not only "invade" the street, but also her existence.

The tone of the story is sad. The only hope Joyce put in Eveline's life is the presence of Frank. Everything about her past and present, apart from her boyfriend, implies desolation, pain and sorrow. Fear also appears as an important element regarding the tone of the story. All her siblings and also herself, were afraid of their father. At the end of the story, Eveline is afraid of the people of the community, that is one of the reasons why she decides to stay. What is almost paradoxical is that she's afraid of Frank, the man who she was sure could save her.

I remember when I ruled these lands, it wasn’t that long ago. A few centuries maybe but we Elves have always lived long lives. I was never unseated, somehow I just woke up one morning and things had changed. My throne was gone and my children had grown, as if I had slept a long, long time. And yet when I would try to speak to them they simply ignored me. Everyone ignored me. My kingdom had becoming something that I wouldn’t have expected, a multi-cultural, multi-racial seat of a great empire. This Empire however was not run by a great emperor as mine had been, no it was run by a council of mages, including my Daughter, Venastra. She had grown strong and beautiful and led this council so masterfully. I remember back to the day when I awoke. I had felt sick to my stomach seeing so many humans and dwarves wandering the city, I couldn’t understand why this great elven city had lowered itself to such a degree. I remember seething with frustration, shouting at my Daughter as she ran the Council. But none there noticed. It wasn’t until I was forced to watch my Daughter fall in love with a Human that I finally started to realize I had truly been lost and forgotten. I watched with anger and fury as he courted her with a strange ritual, one that she found perfectly fascinating. I remember how I longed to strangle him in his sleep. But it wasn’t until the day Their child was born that I started to see how perfectly in love they were. The perfection of this child, somehow a half breed and yet greater than its parents. So beautiful. My Daughter looked into the child’s eyes and it stared back, only to look past her, to me, and it smiled. I cried that day, I hadn’t been noticed in so long, but somehow this child could see me. Venastra spoke softly “There you are, my little Elondis.” I was shocked to find the name she had given him was my own, shocked and moved. What was it about this child that had softened my cold and angry heart. As young Elondis grew he learned to speak, and could even hear me, of course his mother and father thought me little more than an imaginary friend much to little Elondis’ frustration. His mother taught him the ways of magic, and his father the way of the smith. But all too soon he told me. “Grandfather I see you fading from my sight, I fear as I get older I will be unable to see you.” I placed my ethereal hand on his shoulder as best I could and spoke firmly “You do not need me my boy, you have made me so happy, I am glad I lingered here long enough to see you grow to this age but now I think its time for me to move on.” The boy tried to hug me but of course passed through, he shouted up at me, “ I will never forget you!” I nodded and chose this moment to fade into whatever lay beyond. It was my time to rest now that my anger and prejudice has been sapped by this boy and I am finally ready to move on
