When all citizens in a nation vote and participate in government it is referred to as a direct democracy. However, many nations have large populations and use and indirect form of democracy instead. This is because if all votes for all citizens where counted, it could take months at a time for even simple issues. In an indirect form of democracy citizens elect people who have similar belief and values as they do to vote for them.

Direct democracy is when the people vote directly on the laws or other issues that are proposed. Indirect democracy is when the people elect representatives who vote on laws on the behalf of the people. An example of direct democracy was in Ancient Athens where all citizens voted on laws equally. An example of indirect democracy is when we elect people to Congress to represent us.

Hope this helps! :D

What document and principles were influenced by the Enlightenment philosophers?
Xelga [282]
The Enlightment idea that reason trumped tradition is what pervaded the entire process of the writing of the Constitution. But the ProtestantEstablishment of the time viewed the enlightenment as anti religious. Historian Daniel Boorstin had significant influence when he wrote that the American Revolution was not due to a pervading influence of the Enlightment. Rather it was the common experience of the colonies of oppression. I recommend looking at the Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of the American Enlightenment
