In the book <em>Summer of the Mariposas</em>, we learn of five sisters namely, Odilia, Juanita, Delia and Vilia, and Pita. They were abandoned by their father but lived with their mother. During summer when their mother was away at work, the five girls took delight in swimming at the Rio Grande river. It was during one of their fun times that they noticed the body of a dead man that was swept in from Mexico. The sisters wanted to take the corpse back to Mexico and also inquire from their grandmother who lived there, exactly where their father was.

Odilia who was the eldest of the sisters was strongly against this plan but rather advised that they report to the police. Her resistance fell on deaf ears as the sisters went ahead with their adventure.
