William Tyndale was born in Slymbridge, near the Welsh border of England between 1484 and 1496. He was an English Bible priest and translator who was responsible for translating the first English Bible that was extracted directly from the Hebrew and Greek texts, the first translation in English to use Jehovah as the name of God as the English Protestant reformers prefer, the first English translation to take advantage of the printing press, and the first of the new English Bibles of the Reformation. It was considered a direct challenge to the hegemony of both the Catholic Church and the laws of England that maintained the position of the Church. In 1530, Tyndale also wrote "The Practyse of Prelates", opposing the annulment of Henry VIII from his own marriage, on the basis that it contravened Scripture.
