Urban living was considered more popular, big cities were more liberal, experienced and social. During this period increasing internal migration and the movement of foreign immigrants to America caused the population of cities to increase.
For the first time in America the population of cities surpassed the rural areas. Rural life was seen as family life and the place that protected family values.
