Remember that the hyperbole is a figure of speech in which the author exaggerates to an extreme in an obvious way. This is done in order to make emphasis or to describe something in a more creative way. In this case the author wants to emphasize the fact that he has been reading Moby Dk for so much time he feels years have passed. As he is a junior in high school we know he is young so the exaggeration is evident.
