By contrasting the east's liberalism with the Midwest's social conservatism, the author comments further on the theme of the shallowness of the wealthy.

Answer: Option C.

Explanation:

According to the author in the chapter "The Great Gatsby", there is some kind of quality of distortion in the houses of the rich. They do not have a real lifestyle. They have a very twisted lifestyle which is not liked by the author.

He says that even though they are better than the people of the middle west and their conservatism, they have liberalism in their lifestyle. But still the rich in the east have the quality of distortion and it is fake and is superficial. Because of this he is disappointed. They simply have gratification of desires as the motive of living.

postnew [5]
Victor is perpetually ill, whether it be emotionally, physically, or a combination of the two. His numerous anxieties and regrets appear to be causing him to become ill and to become isolated from society. This is Victor's most important means of evading capture. Victor appears to believe that his physical detachment from his source of stress relieves him of his feelings of guilt and obligation. Victor's condition has the potential to occupy him for months at a time. If he is able to do so, he will simply depart and seek refuge in remote locations such as the Alps. Individual and societal shame, which Victor places on himself, are the root causes of his ailments, which are chronic and progressive.
