Portuguese asserted the island of Sao Tome off the west bank of Africa to set up sugar fields. The fields required numerous workers and the Portuguese constrained the Kongo for an ever-increasing number of slaves. Brought about depleting the Kongo populace in the seventeenth century.

Queen Nzinga of Angola led spirited resistance and battled against the slave exchange and European impact in the seventeenth century. She is known for being an adroit negotiator and visionary military pioneer, she opposed Portuguese attack and slave assaults for a long time.

For the 30 years, queen Nzinga resisted the Portuguese invasion and raid of slaves by resisting.
