By the 18th century, European traders were trading along the Asian coastlines in a peaceful and successful way. Trade with Asia had been taking place for centuries, as the Silk Road allowed Europe to trade with India and China since the Middle Ages. However, after the fall of Constantinople, trade became more difficult to conduct overland. The beginning of the Age of Exploration allowed Europeans to discover ocean routes to Asia, as well as to establish some settlements there during the 15th, 16th and 17th century. This ensured that, by the 18th century, such international trade was well-established and normalized.
