In "Samuel's Memory", Samuel's father becomes sick and dies in the stockades.

"Samuel's memory" is an account of the journey of Samuel Cloud, a Cherokee boy who turned 9 years old while on the Trail of Tears. The story illustrates the experiences Samuel had to go through following the removal of his family from their land. One of the experiences Samuel had to endure is the passing of his father while they were in the stockades. In the account, Samuel expresses that it shocked him, and that he struggled to comprehend why happened.
