The scandal began when they arrested five men who had been spying on the National Democratic Committee at the Watergate Hotel in Washington. As the judicial investigation progressed, evidence was discovered that showed how the Nixon administration was implicated in the facts.

In 1973, President Nixon partially accepted the responsibility of the government. This is how he was forced to dismiss several officials involved.

In 1974, magnetophonic evidence was presented to prove that President Nixon covered up the scandal. This evidence caused the president to lose all political support in Congress. On August 8, Nixon resigned his position as president since he was unable to govern without a "political base" to support him.
