John Smith improved conditions in Jamestown, because he married the chief's daughter Pocahontas, which improved relations between the settlers and the Powhatan Confederacy. When the settlers were on good terms with the Powhatan Confederacy, they were able to have a food supply throughout the winter, as the Native Americans would help them with this and this greatly helped their existence.
