Herod the Great appointed by the Romans in 37 BCE as 'King of Jews' to rule Judea as his empire in Judea came to be known as the Herodian kingdom. According to the archaeologists, he was known as Herod the Builder. During his reign, Judea experienced the construction of the Masada fortress and Caesarea Maritima.
