Charles owns a watch repair shop. He has found that the cost of operating his shop is given by the quadratic function C(x) = 4x2

-368x + 53 where c is cost and x is the number of watches repaired. How many watches must he repair to have the lowest cost?

Answer:

x = 46 watches

Explanation:

If

C(x) = 4x² -368x + 53

then we apply

C(x)' = 0    ⇒   (4x² -368x + 53 )' = 8x - 368 = 0

⇒   x = 368 / 8 = 46 watches

Answer:

\large \boxed{46 }

Explanation:

y = 4x² - 368x + 53

It would be easy to find the minimum using calculus, but we can also do it using algebra.

The standard form of the equation for a parabola is

y =ax² + bx + c

a = 4; b = -368; c = 53

The vertex is the point at which the parabola crosses its axis of symmetry. At that point,

x = -\dfrac{b}{2a} = -\dfrac{-368}{2\times4} = \dfrac{368}{8} = \mathbf{46}\\\\\text{Charles must repair at least $\large \boxed{\textbf{46 watches}}$ to have the lowest cost.}

The graph below shows that Charles' cost is a minimum at 46 watches.

Write a paragraph explaining the effect of surface area on the rate of reaction.
nexus9112 [7]
(For a bit of context I will use the reaction between HCl and Mg as an example)

The larger the surface area of the magnesium metal, the more particles are exposed to collide with the aqueous HCl particles to cause the reaction to occur. This increases the frequency per second of collisions, speeding up the rate of reaction.

The effect of a catalyst is to reduce the minimum collision energy which allows the reaction to happen. This does not increase the number of collisions per second, but increases the percentage of successful collisions, which consequently causes the rate of reaction to increase .

I have drawn diagrams showing the effect of surface area, but there isn't really a meaningful diagram that I know of to show the impact of a catalyst (at least not at GCSE level).

What is special about nitrogen , and what is its main function in the atmosphere
blagie [28]
Nitrogen makes about 78% of the air we breathe. Nitrogen is extremely important in living things. <span>It forms the building blocks of proteins. We need proteins because they make up our skin and hair. Proteins also help us digest food. We get our nitrogen from plants, and plants get it from bacteria in the soil. Our atmosphere provides life with the nitrogen it needs.</span>

Suppose the half-life is 9.0 s for a first order reaction and the reactant concentration is 0.0741 M 50.7 s after the reaction s
bazaltina [42]

<u>Answer:</u> The time taken by the reaction is 84.5 seconds

<u>Explanation:</u>

The equation used to calculate half life for first order kinetics:

k=\frac{0.693}{t_{1/2}}

where,

t_{1/2} = half-life of the reaction = 9.0 s

k = rate constant = ?

Putting values in above equation, we get:

k=\frac{0.693}{9}=0.077s^{-1}

Rate law expression for first order kinetics is given by the equation:

k=\frac{2.303}{t}\log\frac{[A_o]}{[A]}     ......(1)

where,

k = rate constant  = 0.077s^{-1}

t = time taken for decay process = 50.7 sec

[A_o] = initial amount of the reactant = ?

[A] = amount left after decay process =  0.0741 M

Putting values in equation 1, we get:

0.077=\frac{2.303}{50.7}\log\frac{[A_o]}{0.0741}

[A_o]=3.67M

Now, calculating the time taken by using equation 1:

[A]=0.0055M

k=0.077s^{-1}

[A_o]=3.67M

Putting values in equation 1, we get:

0.077=\frac{2.303}{t}\log\frac{3.67}{0.0055}\\\\t=84.5s

Hence, the time taken by the reaction is 84.5 seconds

Indicate the type of solute-solvent interaction that should be most important in each of the following solutions.a. LiCl in wate
topjm [15]

Explanation:

a. LiCl is an ionic molecule whereas water is a polar molecule with net dipole moment in it. There LiCl in water would have an ion-dipole force of interaction.

b. Both NF3 and CH3CN have dipole moment in them, since both are polar molecule. Hence, there would be dipole-dipole interaction.

c. Here both CCl4 and benzene are non polar molecules therefore, they have London dispersion force of interaction.

d. In methylamine and water both have hydrogen bonding in them. The nitrogen of CH3NH2 forms hydrogen bond with water.

When optically active (R)-2-methylcyclohexanone is treated with either aqueous base or acid, racemization occurs. Explain.
IrinaK [193]

Answer:

See explanation

Explanation:

Racemization is said to occur when a 1:1 ratio of (+) and (-) enantiomers of a compound are produced in a reaction.

The reaction of optically active (R)-2-methylcyclohexanone with either aqueous base or acid leads to the formation of a planar enol species for reaction with acid and a planar enolate species for reaction with base.

Both reactions involves the formation of achiral species which reverts back to the chiral product with equal chances of the formation of both enantiomers of the product during the process. This leads to racemization of the product in both cases.
