2+8-z=-24 (add the numbers)
10-z=-24 (move the constant to the right)
-z=-24-10 (calculate)
-z=-34 (change the signs)

Put 34 in place of the z. The problem is basically asking what equation can you do to get -24?

2 + 8 - 34 = -24
