A cube made of platinum (Pt) has an edge length of 1.0 cm. (a) Calculate the number of Pt atoms in the cube. (b) Atoms are spher

ical in shape. Therefore, the Pt atoms in the cube cannot fill all the available space. If only 74 percent of the space inside the cube is taken up by Pt atoms, calculate the radius in picometers of a Pt atom. The density Pt is 21.45 g/cm3, and the mass of a single Pt atom is 3.240 x 10^-22 g. (The volume of a sphere of radius r is 4/5Ïr^3).

Answer:

a)The total number of platinum atoms are 6.620\times 10^{22} atoms.

b)The radius of a Pt atom is 138.7 pm.

Explanation:

a) Let the total number of platinum atoms be x

And mass of x atoms of platinum be m

Edge length of platinum cube ,s= 1.0 cm

Volume of the cube = 1.0 cm^3

Density of the platinum cube = d=21.45 g/cm^3

Mass = Density × Volume

(m)=21.45 g/cm^3\times 1.0 cm^3=21.45 g

Mass of an atom of platinum = 3.240\times 10^{-22} g

x\times 3.240\times 10^{-22} g=21.45 g

x=6.620\times 10^{22} atoms

b) If only 74 percent of the space inside the cube is taken up by Pt atoms.

Volume occupied by platinum atoms = 74% of 1.0 cm^3

V'= 0.74 cm^3

Volume occupied by 6.620\times 10^{22} atoms is0.74 cm^3.

6.620\times 10^{22} \times \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3=V'

6.620\times 10^{22} \times \frac{4}{3}\times 3.14\times r^3=0.74 cm^3

r = 1.387\times 10^{-8} m = 138.7 pm

The radius of a Pt atom is 138.7 pm.

How much energy is required to heat a frozen can of juice (360 grams- mostly water) from 0 degrees Celsius ( the temperature of
Usimov [2.4K]

Answer:

1,100,160J or 262.94 kcal

Explanation:

The juice is frozen at 0 degrees Celsius and I assume that it will become gas at 100 degrees Celsius. So we change the form of the water from solid to liquid, then to gas. That means we have to find out how much heat needed to change water form too, not only the heat needed to increase its temperature.

The latent heat of water is 4.2J/g °C while the heat of fusion is 334 J/g and the heat of vaporization is 2260 J/g. The energy needed will be:

360g * 4.2J/g °C * (110-0°C ) + 360g * 334 J/g + 360g * 2260 /g = 1,100,160J or 262.94 kcal.

Use the reaction given below to solve the problem that follows: Calculate the mass in grams of aluminum oxide produced by the re
bearhunter [10]

Answer:  28.4 g of aluminum oxide is produced by the reaction of 15.0 g of aluminum metal

Explanation:

To calculate the moles :

\text{Moles of solute}=\frac{\text{given mass}}{\text{Molar Mass}}

\text{Moles of} Al=\frac{15.0g}{27g/mol}=0.556moles

The balanced chemical equuation is:

4Al+3O_2\rightarrow 2Al_2O_3

According to stoichiometry :

4 moles of Al produce == 2 moles of Al_2O_3

Thus 0.556 moles of Al will produce=\frac{2}{4}\times 0.556=0.278moles  of Al_2O_3

Mass of Al_2O_3=moles\times {\text {Molar mass}}=0.278moles\times 102g/mol=28.4g

Thus 28.4 g of aluminum oxide is produced by the reaction of 15.0 g of aluminum metal.
