A cube made of platinum (Pt) has an edge length of 1.0 cm. (a) Calculate the number of Pt atoms in the cube. (b) Atoms are spher

ical in shape. Therefore, the Pt atoms in the cube cannot fill all the available space. If only 74 percent of the space inside the cube is taken up by Pt atoms, calculate the radius in picometers of a Pt atom. The density Pt is 21.45 g/cm3, and the mass of a single Pt atom is 3.240 x 10^-22 g. (The volume of a sphere of radius r is 4/5Ïr^3).

Answer:

a)The total number of platinum atoms are 6.620\times 10^{22} atoms.

b)The radius of a Pt atom is 138.7 pm.

Explanation:

a) Let the total number of platinum atoms be x

And mass of x atoms of platinum be m

Edge length of platinum cube ,s= 1.0 cm

Volume of the cube = 1.0 cm^3

Density of the platinum cube = d=21.45 g/cm^3

Mass = Density × Volume

(m)=21.45 g/cm^3\times 1.0 cm^3=21.45 g

Mass of an atom of platinum = 3.240\times 10^{-22} g

x\times 3.240\times 10^{-22} g=21.45 g

x=6.620\times 10^{22} atoms

b) If only 74 percent of the space inside the cube is taken up by Pt atoms.

Volume occupied by platinum atoms = 74% of 1.0 cm^3

V'= 0.74 cm^3

Volume occupied by 6.620\times 10^{22} atoms is0.74 cm^3.

6.620\times 10^{22} \times \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3=V'

6.620\times 10^{22} \times \frac{4}{3}\times 3.14\times r^3=0.74 cm^3

r = 1.387\times 10^{-8} m = 138.7 pm

The radius of a Pt atom is 138.7 pm.

jonny [76]

The volume of the buffer solution having a ph value is calculated by henderson's hasselbalch equation.

Buffer solution is water based solution which consists of a mixture containing a weak acid and a conjugate base of the weak acid. or a weak base and conjugate acid of a weak base.it is a mixture of weak acid and a base. The pH of the buffer solution is determined by the expression of the henderson hasselbalch equation.

              pH=pKa + log [salt]/[acid]

Where, pKa =dissociation constant , A- = concentration of the conjugate base, [HA]= concentration of the acid. Here, a buffer solution contains 0.403m acetic acid  and 250 ml is added  in order to prepare a buffer with a ph of 4.750. Putting all the values in the henderson hasselbalch equation we find the pH of the buffer solution.

What is the molar mass for FeBr3
AleksAgata [21]
Mass of Iron (Fe): 55.845Mass of Bromine (Br): 79.904
You need to multiply the mass of Br by 3 because there are 3 Bromine atoms.
(79.904)(3)+ 55.845= 239.712+55.845                                = 295.557 g/mol

Three common ores of iron are FeO, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4. Iron ores are often reduced to elemental iron by heating in the presence of
brilliants [131]

Answer:

Answers are explained below

Explanation:

(a)

Oxidation number of iron :

FeO = +2

Fe2O3= +3

Fe3O4 = +2 and +3 since Fe3O4 is the mixture of FeO and Fe2O3.

(b) FeO + CO ----> Fe (s) + CO2

(c) In a pure iron metallic bond is exist between the particles of Fe. But in the form of ore metals forms ionic bond with the non-metals.

Hence the properties vary.

Yes carbon steel has greater strength than that of pure iron but retains the property of iron because no chemical reaction occurs between carbon and iron.

d)

Mixing of carbon in iron is a type of physical change since there is no chemical reactions occur between the carbon and iron. Carbon atoms diffuses in the place between the iron atoms.

(f) One of the property of non-metals are brittleness. It is non ductile .

So when the percentage of carbon increases its atoms also occupying more and more free places.

And increasing the brittleness. So the iron becomes less ductile.
