I think there was a part missing but adaptations are when an organism has specific traits that help them survive in an environment, this does not occur over one animals lifetime, it happens over generations. So it would be like if everything set on fire, only the animals that had traits to withstand the fire would reproduce and have offspring. Then that species is adapted to the fires
