Portia is the main female protagonist of the play The Merchant of Venice. She is beautiful like Desdemona and Miranda; gracious and resilient like Cordelia and intelligent and quick-witted like Rosalind. Unlike Juliet, Portia is very tactful in choosing her husband.

Like Viola, Portia disguises herself as a man. She is even smart in assuming the role of an advocate's apprentice and helped save Antonio's life in court.

in argument and intelligence, Portia is better than Regan when she speaks in court. She discovers a technicality in the bond, thereby outwitting the Jewish moneylender Shylock and saving Antonio's life from the pound of flesh demanded.
