Answer: It is called phagocytosis.

Explanation:

Phagocytosis is a process whereby some cells called phagocytes use their plasma membrane to engulf large particles which lead to death and decomposition of the engulfed material for nutrients or as a form of immune response. Examples of living cells that undergo phagoctosis is Amoeba( for nutrition) and white blood cells in multicellular organisms as a form of immune response against pathogens.

Answer: Phagocytosis

Explanation:

Phagocytosis is the process where a cell of the immune system, known as PHAGOCYTES engulfs and destroys viruses, bacteria and waste materials, by forcing them into the vacuoles of their cytoplasm where they are digested.

Which statements about the modification of chromatin structure in eukaryotes are true? Select all that apply. View Available Hin
Kay [80]

The correct answers are:

  • Methylation of histone tails in chromatin can promote condensation of the chromatin.
  • DNA is not transcribed when chromatin is packaged tightly in a condensed form.
  • Acetylation of histone tails is a reversible process.
  • Some forms of chromatin modification can be passed on to future generations of cells.
  • Acetylation of histone tails in chromatin allows access to DNA for transcription.

Histone modifications are post-translational modifications of histone protein that can affect gene expression by altering chromatin structure or recruiting histone modifiers. The most common modifications are methylation, phosphorylation, acetylation and ubiquitylation. All of them affect the binding affinity between histones and DNA and thus loosening (gene activation) or tightening (gene repression) the condensed DNA.

Histone methylation is a transfer of methyl group by histone methyltransferases to lysine or arginine amino acid of protein. Effect of methylation depends on the type of protein that is modified. Demethylation is the reverse process.

Histone acetylation is the process of adding of an acetyl group(by  histone acetyltransferases) to histone proteins and it can also activate or inhibit the gene expression. Deacetilation is reverse process.

List in the order they occur in during the development of red blood cells.
Serhud [2]

Stem cells arise from the inner mass of the cell

Signalling factors trigger differentiation in stem cells

Genes that lead to the production of undifferentiated blood cells are activated

Signalling factors cause undifferentiated blood cells to produce red blood cells

Explanation:

Red blood cells are formed in the bone marrow. The precursor to the RBC is stem cell which is undifferentiated and pluripotent. The stem cell gets differentiated to form immature RBCs. Immature RBC then gets divided and becomes mature. Stem cell giving rise to RBC is called Haemoctytoblast. The process of erythropoiesis takes 2 days to form new  red blood cells
