The Confederacy hoped to have England as its ally, because the south was an important provider of cotton for England. Unluckily, General Lee could not win the Battle of Antietam, and for this reason the British did not want any more trade with the south and started getting cotton from Egypt. If the south had won this battle, they would have gained the support of England to overpower their armies.
