--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Define price and weight
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let the price of the diamond be y and the weight be x.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General equation for y varies directly as square root of x
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
y = kx², where k is a constant

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Find the constant k
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
when x = 12,  y = 7200
7200 = k(12)²
7200 = 144k
k = 7200 ÷ 144
k = 50

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Substitute k into the equation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
y = 50x²

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Calculate the weight of the two broken diamonds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The diamond is broken into 3:1
3 + 1 = 4
4 shares = 12

1 share = 12 ÷ 4
1 share = 3 decigrams

3 shares = 3 x 3
3 shares = 9 decigrams

Ratio 1 : 3 = 3 decigrams : 9 decigrams

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Find price of the of the 3 decigrams
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
y = 50(3)²
y = $450

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Find the price of the 9 decigrams
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
y = 50(9)²
y = $4050

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total price of the 3 decigrams and the 9 decigrams
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$450 + $4050 = $4500

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lost incurred
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$7200 - $4500 = $2700

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: The lost incurred is $2700

The leftmost line segment has a domain of -4 ≤ x < -1, or [-4, 1).

The central line segment has a domain of -1 ≤ x ≤ 2, or [-1, 2].

The rightmost line segment has a domain of 2 < x ≤ 5, or (2, 5].

Overall, this function has a domain of

[-4, 1) U [-1, 2] U (2, 5]

(where U means "union" in the set-theoretic notion)

But this also simplifies to the interval [-4, 5].

These correspond to the <u>first</u> and <u>last</u> choices.

ELEN [110]

Missing term = –2xy

Solution:

Let us first find the quotient of -8x^2y^3 \div xy.

-8x^2y^3 \div xy=\frac{-8x^2y^3 }{xy}

                    =\frac{-8\times x\times x\times y\times y\times y}{xy}

Taking common term xy outside in the numerator.

                    =\frac{xy(-8\times x\times y\times y)}{xy}

Both xy in the numerator and denominator are cancelled.

                    =-8xy^2

Thus, the quotient of -8x^2y^3 \div xy is -8xy^2.

Given the quotient of -8x^2y^3 \div xy is same as the product  of 4xy and ____.

-8xy^2=4xy × missing term

Divide both sides by 4xy, we get

⇒ missing term = \frac{-8xy^2}{4xy}

Cancel the common terms in both numerator and denominator.

⇒ missing term = –2xy

Hence the missing term of the product is –2xy.
