In 1939 Hitler was becoming more and more aggressive with his foreign policies and decided to invade Czechoslovakia. The entire European continent was worry that war could soon be in their door steps.

The British and French fearing the worst of Germany´s actions agreed to support Poland in case that Germany decided to also invade them.

Unfortunately, this was not of any concern to Hitler, and his Nazi Germany continue with the aggression and on September 1st 1939, attacked Poland which was overwhelmed by the Nazi war machine.

After this war like action, the British and French had no more options but give Hitler an ultimatum, to withdraw his forces from the newly occupied Poland. this of course have not effect on Germany and both British and French officially declared war on Hitler and his Nazi Germany.

Which caused Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany in 1939 was the invasion of Poland by the German army on September 1, 1939. There were already tensions between these three countries since the beginning of the Spanish war in 1936, but the war was not officially declared.

Further explanation

The aggressive attitude of Adolf Hitler since his election as leader of Germany in 1933 worried France, Great Britain, and other European countries. The First World War had been so horrible, and no one wanted to take the risk to live another war.

After losing from France in 1918, Germany had to sign the Treaty of Versailles which imposed many hard conditions to accept. But when Adolf Hitler lead Germany, he didn't respect this treaty anymore.

He asked all Germans to participate in military training and gradually reinforced his army in all the cities. He started to attack all over Europe. First, he helped the dictator Franco to take power in Spain. Then he attacked the countries around Germany such as Austria and Czechoslovakia to expand his territory. After that, Hitler's biggest attack was when he invaded Poland which caused the Second World War and became the reason for France and Great Britain to declare war.
