Answer:

Rigor mortis occurs as the sarcoplasmic reticulum deteriorates, releasing calcium ions.

Explanation:

Rigor mortis means stiffening of the body after death. It is one of the most significant signs of death, caused by a change in the chemical balance of the muscles after death. This is where the muscles become hard, making them difficult or impossible to move.

The biochemical cause of rigor mortis begins with the cessation of the pumping of calcium ions into the sarcoplasmic reticulum (due to the absence of ATP) so that the cytosolic concentration of this ion gradually increases, it also contributes to this increase in the cytosolic calcium ion concentration the degradation of the reticulum terminal cisterns. Blood circulation ceases, as does oxygen transport and withdrawal of metabolism products. Enzyme systems continue to function after some time of death. Thus, glycolysis continues in an anaerobic manner, generating lactic acid, which produces a lowering of the pH.

Explanation:

Complete Question

Ecosystem services include processes that increase the quality of the abiotic environment. Which of the following processes would fall under this category?

I) Keystone predators have a marked effect on species diversity.

II) Green plants produce the oxygen we breathe.

III) The presence of land plants builds soil.

IV) The presence of diverse wetlands helps in flood control.

A) only II and IV

B) only I and III

C) only I, II, and IV

D) only II, III, and IV

Solution -

The services of ecosystem has been classified into four groups

a)  Provisioning – Where essential abiotic and biotic substance are produces such as production of food and water, reproducing offspring etc.

b) Regulating – the ecosystems is controlled through environmental factors such as control of climate and disease

c) Supporting – Ecosystem support the activities that are essential for survival. Primarily includes all nutrient cycles, oxygen generation etc.

d) Cultural – Provide aesthetic view and  recreational benefits

Option II co mes under supporting service of ecosystem

Option III co mes under Provisioning service of ecosystem

Option IV co mes under Regulating service of ecosystem

Hence, option D is correct

How does the prey population benefit when individuals in this population are eaten by a predator?
kati45 [8]

Answer:

Not well

Explanation:

A large prey population means there's plenty of food for predators, the predators are more likely to survive and reproduce A large predator population means that the prey population will start to fall as individuals are killed and eaten As the prey population falls, there is less food for predators, so they too decrease in numbers
