The most frequently occurring permanently disabling birth defect, characterized by an abnormal opening in the spinal column, is called spinal bifida. Commonly seen in the lower back and rarely in middle portion or at the neck part. It comes in three types: meningocele, myelomeningocele, and spina bifida occulta.
