Balance the following skeleton reaction and identify the oxidizing and reducing agents: Include the states of all reactants and

products in your balanced equation. You do not need to include the states with the identities of the oxidizing and reducing agents. Zn(s) + NO3−(aq) → Zn(OH)42−(aq) + NH3(g) [basic]

Answer:

4Zn_(_s_)~+~7OH^-~_(_a_q_)~+~NO_3^-_(_a_q_)~+~6H_2O_(_l_)~-->4Zn(OH)_4^-^2_(_a_q_)~+~NH_3_(_g_)

-) Oxidizing agent: NO_3^-_(_a_q_)

-) Reducing agent: Zn_(_s_)

Explanation:

The first step is separate the reaction into the semireactions:

A.Zn~->Zn(OH)_4^-^2

B.NO_3^-~->~NH_3

If we want to balance in basic medium we have to follow the rules:

1. We adjust the oxygen with OH^-

2. We adjust the H with H_2O

3. We adjust the charge with e^-

Lets balance the first semireaction A. :

Zn~+~4OH^-~->Zn(OH)_4^-^2~+~2e^-

Now, lets balance semireaction B:

NO_3^-~+~8e^-~+~6H_2O~->~NH_3~+~9OH^-

Finally, we have to add the two semireactions:

_________________________________________

8~(Zn~+~4OH^-~->Zn(OH)_4^-^2~+~2e^-)

2~(NO_3^-~+~8e^-~+~6H_2O~->~NH_3~+~9OH^-)

_________________________________________

(8Zn~+~32OH^-~->8Zn(OH)_4^-^2~+~16e^-)

(2NO_3^-~+~16e^-~+~12H_2O~->~2NH_3~+~18OH^-)

Cancel out the species on both sides:

8Zn~+~14OH^-~+~2NO_3^-~+~12H_2O~-->8Zn(OH)_4^-^2~+~2NH_3

Simplifying the equation :

4Zn~+~7OH^-~+~NO_3^-~+~6H_2O~-->4Zn(OH)_4^-^2~+~NH_3

The Zn_(_s_) is oxidized therefefore is the reducing agent. The NO_3^-_(_a_q_)is reduced therefore is the oxidizing agent.

g Reduction involves the A) loss of neutrons, gain of electrons, and an increase in oxidation state. B) loss of neutrons. C) inc
artcher [175]

Answer:

E. Gain of electrons

Explanation:

A reduction reaction is one part of the two concurrent reactions that take place in a redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction.

During reduction, an atom gains electrons from a donor atom, and it's oxidation number becomes smaller.

Option A is wrong because reduction does not increase oxidation state nor are neutrons involved

Option B is wrong because reduction is not a nuclear reaction (does not involve the nucleons)

Option C is wrong because reduction leads to reduction in oxidation state

Option D is wrong leads to a reduction in oxidation state when electrons are gained

Option E is correct because reduction involves gain of electrons

Would an earthquake support the principle of unoformitarianism or the principle of catastrophism?
Kisachek [45]
An earthquake would support the principle of catastrophism because it causes catastraphies in its quakes and shakes.

A 5.00 mL of a salt solution of unknown concentration was mixed with 35.0 mL of 0.523 M AgNO3. The mass of AgCl solid formed was
Lapatulllka [165]

Answer:

The chemical term in the equation for the precipitate of AgCl(s) is n=3.54*10^-3

Explanation:

the quantity of AgCl(s) in moles is:

n = 0.508g / 143.32 g/mol = 3.54*10^-3 mol

to verify it the mass of AgNO3 involved in the reaction should be

n AgNO3 required = n = 3.54*10^-3 mol

the mass of n involved should be higher than n AgNO3

n existing = V*N = 0.523 mol/L * 35*10^-3 L = 18.305*10^-3 mol
