I dont understand proportions :( someone please help me understand with an example

The no-brain way to do it is to

subtract one side from both sides so you have (something) = 0.
divide by the coefficient of the variable.
add the opposite of the constant.

Of course, at some point, you need to simplify the equation so you have something like
