The degree is 2. Notice how your are squaring the first term, or raising it to a power of 2 (p²). The degree is simply that number, the number you are raising p to. The degree of a polynomial is also the highest power out of the entire polynomial. For example, in x³-x²+5x, the degree is 3, as it's the highest power.
