Explanation:

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic.  Mike Culbreath was sick because he had an infection with a bacteria called campylobacter, which people usually contract from eating uncooked infected chicken.

However, the particular strain of bacteria he had was resistant to to Ciprofloxacin, because this drug is often used to treat farm animals.

Therefore, Mike got sicker and sicker until his kidneys almost failed from dehydration.
