Clifton noticed that Lindsey is looking upset at the party. Rather than assuming she is having a bad time at the party, he asks

her "Are you having a good time here? You looked upset and I wanted to see if someone said something or if it was what happened at the office. Is anything wrong?" How is Clifton using communication competence?

Answer: Clinton has not used his utterances very well, his communication competence is poor.

Firstly he is asking Lindsey is she is having a good time, when Lindsey has already communicated he bad mood, using non verbal communication, which tells the better truth about someone.

Secondly Clinton is giving her options, to divert her reasons of being upset. Because Clinton is trying to attribute her sadness to what happened at the office or what someone said. Her real reason can be diverted to either of the reason Clinton gave.

The best way Clinton could have communicated is " I noticed you're upset, please what's wrong".
