He was the first person to access the vice presidency under the terms of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment, and when Nixon resigned the presidency, he was the first (and to date, the only) President of the United States that reached this position without being elected President or Vice President by the Electoral College. He was also the first US president to lose a war (the Vietnam War was lost under his mandate).
