What is a counterexample for "subtraction of whole numbers is commutative" ??

Mathematics

The commutatice property for addition says a+b=b+a
If it was for subtraction, then it would be a-b=b-a
Take a=7 and b=5
7-5 is not equal to 5-7
2 is not equal to -2
So subtraction is not commutative for whole numbers.

Hope this helps :)

A phone company offers two monthly plans. Plan A costs $10 plus an additional $0.15 for each minute of calls. Plan B costs $30 p
Mkey [24]

First, you need to write to expressions to model each situation:

Plan A: 10+0.15x

Plan B: 30+0.1x

Next, set the expressions equal to each other and solve for x:

10+0.15x=30+0.1x

<em>*Subtract 0.1x from both sides to isolate the variable*</em>

10+0.05x=30

<em>*Subtract 10 from both sides*</em>

0.05x=20

<em>*Divide both sides by 0.05*</em>

x=400

The plans would have the same cost after 400 minutes of calls.

To find how much money the plans cost at 400 minutes, plug 400 into either expression.  We'll use Plan A:

10+0.15(400)

10+60

70

The plans will cost $70.

Hope this helps!

Suppose y varies directly with x. if y=-3 when x=5 find y when x=-1
Scrat [10]
\bf \begin{array}{cccccclllll}&#10;\textit{something}&&\textit{varies directly to}&&\textit{something else}\\ \quad \\&#10;\textit{something}&=&{{ \textit{some value}}}&\cdot &\textit{something else}\\ \quad \\&#10;y&=&{{ k}}&\cdot&x&#10;&#10;&&  y={{ k }}x&#10;\end{array}&#10;\\ \quad \\&#10;\textit{we know that, when}&#10;\begin{cases}&#10;y=-3\\&#10;x=5&#10;\end{cases}\implies y=kx\implies (-3)=k(5)

solve for "k", to find the "constant of variation",
then plug it back in the y = kx, to get the equation
now
what's is y when x = -1?
well, just plug that in the equation with the found "k" value,
to get "y" :)
