The Colafax massacre occured on April 13, 1873 (Easter Sunday), the massacre was caused by the Louisiana governor's race in 1872 where the Republicans which consists of blacks won the contest and retained control of the Senate, the Democrats consisting of whites became angry over the defeat and vowed for revenge.
On April 13 1873, more than 300 armed white men attacked the courthouse building. When the leader of the attackers James Hadnot who was accidentally shot by his own men it resulted in the killing of the blacks who were their prisoners. A total of approximately over 198 black were killed and 3 whites were killed in this bloody battle.
The Colfax Massacre has been described as the bloodiest single instance of racial violence during the Reconstruction era.
The Colfax massacre instructed several lessons, including the lengths some opponents of Reconstruction would go in order to regain their accustomed authority. Among blacks in Louisiana, the incident was long remembered as proof that in any massive confrontation, they stood at a fatal disadvantage.
