During his school years, he dedicated his life to make aware about the injustices that colour people were living at that time. He started to participate in the Freedom Riders in 1961. He was also the leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), an organization that was involved in many movements against racial segregation. The "Bloody Sunday" protest occurred in Selma in 1965 in repudiation to the murder of Jimmie Lee Jackson (he was protecting his family from an attack of mounted police). Many people were injured and among them was John Lewis. When he left the SNCC, due to internal problems, he dedicated to politics to the present.
