Gabriella and Stephanie each improved their yards by planting grass sod and ornamental grass. They bought their supplies from th

e same store. Gabriella spent $172 on 14 ft2 of grass sod and 2 bunches of ornamental grass. Stephanie spent $158 on 7 ft2 of grass sod and 9 bunches of ornamental grass. Find the cost of one ft2 of grass sod and the cost of one bunch of ornamental grass.

14x + 2y = $172
7x + 9y = $158 (x= grass sod y= ornamental grass)

14x + 2y= 172
14x + 18y= 316 (Multiply Equation 2 by 2 to eliminate x)
when you subtract both equations you get -16y= -144 therefore y=9
Final step: Plug in 14x + 2(9) = 172       14x=154      x=11
1 sq ft of grass sod costs $11 and one bunch of ornamental grass costs $9

3/4=j-1/2 solve the equation check your solution
DIA [1.3K]
3/4= j-1/2
first to add 1/2 to both sides to solve for j
3/4 + 1/2= j
second you find a common denominator in order to add 3/4 and 1/2, the common denominator would be 4, you would have to change 3/4 at all because the denominator is already 4 but in order to make the denominator of 1/2, 4 you would have to multiply both the denominator and numerator by 2 so
3/4 + 2/4 = 5/4
so 5/4 =j

to check your answer you plug 5/4 in for j
3/4 = 5/4 -1/2
again you need to find a common denominator between 5/4 and 1/2 which again would be 4, and again you wouldn't change 5/4 but you would multiply both the numerator and the denominator of 1/2 so
3/4= 5/4-2/4
5-2= 3 and you would keep the 4 so
5/4 - 2/4 = 3/4

so j =  5/4
