The republic began when the Romans overthrew the Etruscan conquerors in 509BC, and afterwards the citizens elected their representatives to rule on their behalf. It is very different from democracy, in democracy every citizen plays active role in the government of state while it is not so in the republic. The wealthy people dominated the early Roman republic. The aristocrats were known as Republicans. The lower class citizens were known as plebeians and didn't play any role in the government.
