The discovery of penicillin is due to the Scottish biochemist Alexander Fleming. During the First World War, Fleming served as a military doctor and could not accept the fact that soldiers wounded after a successful operation still died - from the onset of gangrene or sepsis. After the war ended, Fleming returned to the UK and set out to improve the quality of Lister's antiseptic dressings soaked in carbolic acid. Soon he discovered a natural antiseptic in nasal mucus and called it lysozyme.
