In 1774, as was elected as town messenger, where he rode with Paul Revere to alert Portsmouth residents, New Hampshire about two British ships. As the war broke out between the colonists and British in America, he joined the army and served as a private in Colonel John Langdon’s company and fought at the Battle of Saratoga.
