Answer:

Colonies had one purpose: to generate revenue for the mother country.  In other words, European nations could secure raw materials cheaply and sell finished goods to other European nations and to their colonies at a higher price.

There WAS no temple in Jerusalem, but there was plenty of worship, from

Hebrew worship took place anywhere else.
