7x + y =50.... eq 1

4x + y =23....eq 2

Subtract eq 2 from eq 1

7x + y = 50

-

4x + y = 23

This becomes;

7x - 4x + y - y= 50 -23

3x = 27

Divide both sides by the coefficient of x; 3

x = 9

Slot in the value of x in eq 1

7 (9) + y = 50

63 + y = 50

Subtract 63 from both sides

63 - 63 + y = 50 - 63

y = -13
