Phrase ‘Iron Curtain’ was used by Prime Minister Winston Churchill to refer to the division that was between Western powers and the areas which were controlled by the Soviet Union.

<u>Winston Churchill condemned the policies of the Soviet Union in Europe and to describe these policies he gave a speech that is considered as one of the most famous speeches made during the cold war. In that speech, he used the word ‘ Iron Curtain' to describe the policies of the Soviet Union.</u> This speech was given in Westminster college, Missouri in the year 1945. President of the United States, Harry S. Truman also joined Churchill and at the start of his speech, Winston Churchill praised the United States and termed the US as Pinnacle of World power. He warned about the policies that were related to the expansion of the Soviet Union and stated that dealing with the Soviets was nothing which he admired as strength.

<u>President Truman and other officials of United States warmly received the speech made by Winston Churchill and the phrase ‘Iron Curtain' got places in the official vocabulary of the cold war whereas the Soviets denounced the speech as an invitation to war and referred to Churchill's comments on English Speaking world as Imperialist Racism. </u>
