Transcription is a process of copying DNA into messenger RNA (mRNA). Since DNA is in the nucleus, transcription must occur in the nucleus. Free mRNA leaves the nucleus and enters the cytoplasm. There, mRNA serves as a template for protein synthesis. This process is called translation and it occurs in the cytoplasm.
