The rate of photosynthesis can be measured in different ways using the scientific method:

  • The carbon dioxide being taken up by the plant can be measured.
  • The oxygen being produced can be measured.
  • The increase in dry mass can be measured.

For example, oxygen can be measured by placing a plant in a water bath containing a capillary tube. The rate of bubbles being formed can be measured. From this, results can be deduced and conclusions can be drawn.
